Recent Media Coverage of Interest to Dahlonega Care Center
For the second consecutive day, pro-life advocates were invited to Governor Perdue's office to witness the signing of a pro-life bill following the 2007 legislative session. Thanks to Senator David Shafer and Representative Tom Rice, legislation that encourages ethical research involving stem cells from the umbilical cord, placental tissue and amniotic fluid will become Georgia law. The Saving the Cure Act (SB 148), also known as Keone's Bill, calls for the universal collection of postnatal tissue and fluid for medical research and treatment. During the legislative process, the bill received bipartisan support in both chambers, with a 39-15 vote in the Senate and 158-0 in the House. With the passage of SB 148, Georgia immediately emerges as a national leader
in ethical stem cell research. Governor Perdue's signature signals that Georgia
wants to create an environment where stem cells are widely available from
sources other than the human embryo and where collection of these stem cells
will not result in the destruction of human life. The Saving the Cure Act will
become effective on July 1, 2007.
This week, the Woman's Ultrasound Right to Know Act (HB 147) passed 36-17 after intense debate in the Georgia Senate. The legislative day began in the Senate with an unexpected strategic decision by Senator Nancy Schaefer (R-Turnersville), who presented the bill to the full Senate. For only the second time during the entire legislative session, the Senate voted to engross the bill. By engrossing the bill, pro-abortion advocates were unable to attach unfriendly amendments and turn attention from the merits of the bill.
Fred Fister of the United Way informed the Dahlonega Care Center that money given to the United Way in memory of his wife (she passed away on Mothers Day) will be presented to DCC. Mr. Fister said money is still coming in, but at present the amount is $2100.
The Dahlonega Care Center is sponsoring a "Walk to Celebrate Life" event on Saturday, May 6, 2006. We will meet at Hancock Park in Dahlonega at 9 a.m. and the 7/10 of mile walk will be finished by noon. Everyone is invited so bring the whole family including babies in strollers. The first 50 to turn in a sponsor list with money collected will get a free printed T-shirt. Others turned in after the first 50 will receive a printed helium balloon with "Celebrate Life" or "Life is Precious." You might want to bring cute posters of babies or elderly people. Feel free to join us even if you didn't get any sponsors. Explain to your friends, family, and those you work with or attend church with that you are involved in a fundraiser which helps moms and babies -- a crisis pregnancy center. Invite them to come with you. There will be a booth with pastries and drinks for sale. At the end of the walk there will be a drawing for prizes so be sure to get your ticket. Remember, this is a festive walk to celebrate life!
"Virgins rank higher on scales of life satisfaction, per capita income, positive net worth and lower divorce rates, according to a study published in the journal Adolescent and Family Health." These research findings on 7,000 men and women were reported by Focus on the Family in an article highlighting teen virginity leads to greater life success. "The results quantifiably challenge the rhetoric of pro-promiscuity organizations, such as Planned Parenthood, which often tout the benefits of virginity as unrealistic and outdated. They argue that parenthood is the real reason teens suffer as the result of premarital sex, so they urge school boards to turn sex education into 'how-to' classes" the article says. "These better outcomes were not merely the result of avoiding teenage pregnancy or fatherhood. The outcomes are inherent to remaining abstinent," noted Dr. Reginald Finger, medical analyst for Focus on the Family and the study's lead researcher. "The unmistakable message of this study is that abstinence is the best course for our children and teens."
This gift has had an obvious impact on many clients. One client went to the front office after her ultrasound, knelt down on the floor in front of the models of the babies, and just stared at the one that was the age of her baby. She seems to be changing her mind about having an abortion. We are grateful for the gift and have seen first-hand the impact it has on the moms.
In December, the CDC’s Center for National Health Statistics released the findings from the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth, revealing a positive trend toward abstinence among teenagers. In its news release, the CDC stated, “Sexual activity declined significantly for younger teenage girls and for teenage boys between 1995 and 2002.” Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson was excited about the survey’s results. “There is much good news in these results,” he said. “More teenagers are avoiding or postponing sexual activity which can lead to sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancy or emotional and societal responsibilities for which they are not prepared.”
One out of three sexually active teenagers graduate high school with an STD (Medical Institute for Sexual Health). Condoms provide little to no protection from the three most common STD's -- HPV, Herpes, and Chiamydia (CDC - National Cancer Division).
While the demand for abortion grows, so does the scientific case against the arguments often used to support it. Recent powerful evidence comes from immunology.
The picture says it all and we are very thankful - $10,000 donation to DCC from the Lumpkin Co. Republican party. We were one of four charities to receive a donation! The check was presented to the Dahlonega Care Center on October 16, 2004.
Many of the candidates who were running for office attended and there was a special - meet and greet - time following presentation of door prizes. We want to thank the following for donations of great door prizes: Gary Caprara of Insulated Glass Works for framed stain glass; Tom Harper for print he framed; the Owens for a “tower” of candy from The Fudge Factory; Four $5.00 gift certificates from J&J Foods; gold leaf pendant from Rachel Wilkerson of The Gold Shop; and ceramic pitcher from Julie of Our Father’s Place Christian Book Store. The recipients seemed very pleased when their tickets were chosen! Thank you for your part in this fundraiser and for taking a stand for life.
The Christian Medical Association says the death of a California teen who took the abortion pill shows that it shouldn't have been rushed through the Food and Drug Administration approval process. |
